SOS Eddie? McGuire could replace Drummond on AFL Commission

Could the AFL issue an SOS to Eddie McGuire in the wake of the Geelong secret concussion contract saga?

As the AFL navigates another concussion scandal, speculation over the future of Craig Drummond as Chairman of the AFL Commission is rife and according to SEN’s Tom Morris, the murmurings around McGuire are gathering momentum.

Drummond was Geelong’s president when secret concussion waivers were signed by the club and defender Jake Kolodjashnij back in 2024, and while the 66-year-old has apologised for his role in the debacle, there are growing calls for him to stand down.

“The fact Drummond had to release a statement on Thursday and then again on Saturday is incredibly embarrassing for him and the AFL,” Morris said on SEN’s Fireball. “If he had released the Saturday statement on Thursday it would have circumnavigated a lot of the issues they have had since.

“So far Craig has released two statements and given no indication to anyone that he intends to step down. I would love to know if the presidents or the rest of the commission think he should step down.

“Conversations I have had with senior people in the AFL are that this is an issue for Craig.

“There is a feel that if Drummond steps down, there might be an SOS to Eddie McGuire, go and be the chairman of the AFL. Wouldn’t that be unbelievable.

“This will play out over the next week or so.”

When it comes to sanctions, Morris believes Geelong will cop a six-figure fine.

“I would be surprised if there is any further sanctions for Geelong beyond a $100k fine and the AFL would like to wrap this up quickly.

“But what I can’t get my head around is the fact this process took place with an amendment to his contract and why the AFL and his manager were not informed.

“This is not a throwaway line, this is a long, detailed document. His manager Marty Pask who I have spoken to, says he was not across this document. He was across the contract negotiations at the end of the year, but the extra document he had no visibility on.”

Geelong’s board are set to gather for an emergency meeting later today (Monday).
