Laying out what might happen in the last round of any season is always a difficult task and fraught with danger.

But this task has been completely off the charts with only two wins separating third and 12th on the ladder heading into Round 21 of the VFL season.

The possibilities are endless, and even if a large number of them listed below range from unlikely to impossible, a 0.01 per cent mathematical miracle must never be completely ruled out.

To calculate the possible margins needed to overturn percentage differences, the basic starting formula I used were scorelines of 75-74 for close games and 100-50 for bigger margins, stretching or shrinking those as required until the ladder position changed.

No formula is perfect – higher or lower scores will alter percentages slightly differently – but they will almost certainly be accurate to within a goal. Either way, AFL.com.au’s VFL Live Ladder will get the biggest workout it has had in its short life!

Good luck to all teams trying to secure places in what should be an epic finals series.

GEELONG

1st, 15-2, 169.57%
STREAK: Lost 1 (2026: WWWLbWWWWWWWWbWWWWLb)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: lost Collingwood (28, GMHBA Stadium); def Casey (53, Casey Fields); def St Kilda (26, RSEA Park); def Richmond (82, GMHBA Stadium); def Frankston (52, Frankston Park)
TO COME: 17.North Melbourne (12.05pm Sunday, Arden St)
IF THEY WIN: 1st and host a qualifying final
IF THEY LOSE: 1st and host a qualifying final
SUMMARY: Top spot locked in a long time ago. Now for what matters.
PREDICTION: 16-2 (1st)

WERRIBEE

2nd, 12-4-1, 117.06%
STREAK: Lost 1 (2026: WLLWWLDbWWWWbWWWWbWL)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: lost Tasmania (12, North Hobart Oval); def Footscray (20, Avalon Airport Oval); def Port Melbourne (38, Avalon Airport Oval); def St Kilda (1, RSEA Park); def Southport (20, Avalon Airport Oval)
TO COME: 20.Sandringham (2.05pm Saturday, Avalon Airport Oval)
IF THEY WIN: 2nd and host a qualifying final
IF THEY LOSE: 2nd and host a qualifying final
SUMMARY: Second spot locked in after Round 19. Can they go two from three?
PREDICTION: 13-4-1 (2nd)

BOX HILL HAWKS

3rd, 11-6, 110.91%
STREAK: Won 1 (2026: WLLWWWbWWLWbWLWLWLWb)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: def North Melbourne (31, Box Hill City Oval); lost Essendon (25, Kennedy Community Centre); def Richmond (12, Box Hill City Oval); lost Carlton (23, Box Hill City Oval); def Tasmania (5, Dial Park)
TO COME: 18.Casey Demons (2.05pm Sunday, Box Hill City Oval)
IF THEY WIN: 3rd and play Werribee at Werribee in a qualifying final
IF THEY LOSE: 3rd if Sydney and Tasmania both lose; 4th if one of those happens; 5th if they both win. There is also the possibility of Frankston (roughly 58 points combined), Coburg (99), GWS (134), Essendon (174) and Port Melbourne (218) winning and making up percentage deficits to go ahead of the Hawks.
SUMMARY: The Hawks should deal with the Demons and lock in third spot, but defeat could cost them the double chance with the Swans and Devils both starting favourites. It’s unlikely, but not impossible, for Frankston and Coburg to tip them out of the top six. The others realistically can’t catch up.
PREDICTION: 12-6 (3rd)

SYDNEY

4th, 10-6-1, 126.50%
STREAK: Lost 1 (2026: LbWWWWLWLLLWbWWDWWLb)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: lost Tasmania (30, Tramway Oval); def GWS (78, Engie Stadium); def Brisbane Lions (16, Tramway Oval); drew Williamstown (0, Blacktown International Sports Park); def Gold Coast (40, People First Stadium)
TO COME: 9.Essendon (1.05pm Saturday, Windy Hill)
IF THEY WIN: 3rd if Box Hill Hawks lose; 4th if they win. Tasmania almost certainly can’t make up the massive percentage deficit (roughly 222 points combined) to catch the Swans.
IF THEY LOSE: Fall below Essendon and the winner of GWS v Tasmania to 6th; 7th if one of Frankston, Coburg and Port Melbourne win; 8th if two win; 9th if all three win.
SUMMARY: The Swans put their top-four spot in jeopardy with the loss to Tasmania, and now must beat a Bombers team away on a five-match winning streak or risk sliding all the way to an away wildcard final, given all three of the Dolphins, Lions and Borough play lower-ranked opposition. If they can’t do that, they can’t win the flag anyway.
PREDICTION: 11-6-1 (4th)

TASMANIA

5th, 10-6-1, 111.70%
STREAK: Won 2 (2026: WWWbLWDLbLWWWLLWLbWW)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: def Werribee (12, North Hobart Oval); def Sydney (30, Tramway Oval); lost Williamstown (6, DSV Stadium); def Gold Coast (50, North Hobart Oval); lost Box Hill Hawks (5, Dial Park)
TO COME: 8.GWS (9.35am Sunday, Tom Wills Oval)
IF THEY WIN: 3rd if Box Hill Hawks and Sydney both lose; 4th if one of them loses; 5th if both win. They would need to win by roughly 222 points more than Sydney does to catch the percentage deficit.
IF THEY LOSE: Fall below GWS to 6th; 7th if one of Frankston, Coburg, Essendon and Port Melbourne win; 8th of two win; 9th if three win; 10th if four win. Can also drop below Williamstown if the Seagulls win and make up the percentage deficit (roughly 108 points combined).
SUMMARY: The Devils are playing finals in their first season, which is a remarkable achievement, and could secure a home match in either the first or second week unless a perfect storm of results go against them. Either way, they can’t miss finals due to Williamstown and Frankston playing each other.
PREDICTION: 11-6-1 (5th)

FRANKSTON

6th, 10-7, 106.60%
STREAK: Won 1 (2026: LWLLWWbWLWWLWbLWWLWb)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: def Port Melbourne (30, Frankston Park); lost Southport (7, Fankhauser Reserve); def GWS (64, Frankston Park); def Footscray (13, Mission Whitten Oval); lost Geelong (52, Frankston Park)
TO COME: 11.Williamstown (12.05pm Saturday, DSV Stadium)
IF THEY WIN: 3rd if Box Hill Hawks (by enough to cover the percentage deficit of roughly 58 points combined), Sydney and Tasmania all lose; 4th if two lose; 5th if one loses; 6th if they all win. Coburg (41), GWS (78), Essendon (121) or Port Melbourne (162) can overtake if they win by these numbers more than them to make up their percentage deficits.
IF THEY LOSE: Fall below Williamstown to 7th; 8th if one of Coburg, GWS, Essendon, Port Melbourne and Carlton win; 9th if two win; 10th if three win; 11th if four win, 12th if all five win. Coburg (42), GWS (67), Essendon (106) and Port Melbourne (163) can overtake if they lose by these numbers less than them to make up their percentage deficits. Carlton has a significantly better percentage than all teams above it and would go ahead of any losers with a win.
SUMMARY: 10 wins is usually the magic number. Not this year. Despite sitting in the top six with the best percentage, there is every chance the Dolphins miss the finals altogether if they can’t beat a Williamstown team playing for its season at Point Gellibrand. That’s not an easy task, but it simply must be done to avoid a nerve-wracking rest of the weekend.
PREDICTION: 10-8 (9th)

COBURG

7th, 10-7, 103.58%
STREAK: Won 2 (2026: LWLLLWWbWWLWWbLWLWbW)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: def Williamstown (15, DSV Stadium); def Sandringham (14, Barry Plant Park); lost Essendon (53, Windy Hill); def Casey Demons (43, Barry Plant Park); lost GWS (2, Narrandera Sportsground)
TO COME: 13.Southport (12.05pm Saturday, Barry Plant Park)
IF THEY WIN: 3rd if Box Hill Hawks (by enough to cover the percentage deficit of roughly 99 points combined), Sydney, Tasmania and Frankston all lose; 4th if three lose; 5th if two lose; 6th if one loses, 7th if they all win. The Lions must win by roughly 41 points more than the Dolphins do to catch their percentage. GWS (30), Essendon (73) or Port Melbourne (119) can overtake if they win by these numbers more than them to make up their percentage deficits.
IF THEY LOSE: 7th if GWS, Essendon, Port Melbourne, Williamstown and Carlton all lose; 8th if one wins; 9th if two win; 10th if three win; 11th if four win; 12th if all five win. The Lions must lose by roughly 42 points less than the Dolphins do to catch their percentage. GWS (25), Essendon (64) or Port Melbourne (119) can overtake if they lose by these numbers less than them to make up their percentage deficits. Carlton has a significantly better percentage than all teams above it and would go ahead of any losers with a win.
SUMMARY: So close they can taste it. The Lions’ equation is simple – win and the longest finals drought in the VFL is over – and they will likely have a home final too. Lose and it will be another agonising wait similar to last year when things went awry and they could do nothing about it. They will know about Williamstown immediately, but eyes would then be glued to screens all weekend to learn their fate.
PREDICTION: 11-7 (6th)

GWS

8th, 10-7, 101.72%
STREAK: Won 1 (2026: WWbLWWLWWLbLWWWbLLLW)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: def Gold Coast (13, Blacktown International Sports Park); lost Southport (41, Fankhauser Reserve); lost Sydney (78, Engie Stadium); lost Frankston (64, Frankston Park); def Coburg (2, Narrandera Sportsground)
TO COME: 5.Tasmania (9.35am Sunday, Tom Wills Oval)
IF THEY WIN: Will overtake Tasmania; 3rd if Box Hill Hawks (by enough to cover the percentage deficit of roughly 134 points combined), Sydney, Frankston and Coburg all lose; 4th if one wins; 5th if two win; 6th if three win; 7th if all four win. The Giants must win by roughly 78 more than Frankston and 30 more than Coburg to catch their percentage. Essendon (43) and Port Melbourne (92) can overtake if they win by these numbers more than them to make up their percentage deficits.
IF THEY LOSE: 8th if Essendon, Port Melbourne, Williamstown and Carlton all lose; 9th if one wins; 10th if two win; 11th if three win; 12th if all four win. The Giants must lose by roughly 68 points less than the Dolphins and 26 less than the Lions to catch their percentage. Essendon (44) or Port Melbourne (107) can overtake if they lose by these numbers less than them to make up their percentage deficits. Carlton has a significantly better percentage than all teams above it and would go ahead of any losers with a win.
SUMMARY: The Giants put themselves back in contention in their high-scoring win over Gold Coast, and will give themselves every chance of stifling the Devils’ momentum. A 9.35am start will be more familiar to the home team, making the first half critical to qualifying for a maiden finals series.
PREDICTION: 10-8 (10th)

ESSENDON

9th, 10-7, 99.08% STREAK: Won 5 (2026: LWLWLLWbWLWLbLWWWWbW)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: def Collingwood (1, Windy Hill); def Box Hill Hawks (25, Kennedy Community Centre); def Coburg (53, Windy Hill); def Brisbane Lions (30, Brighton Homes Arena); def St Kilda (25, Windy Hill)
TO COME: 4.Sydney (1.05pm Saturday, Windy Hill). IF THEY WIN: Will overtake Sydney; 4th if Box Hill Hawks (by enough to cover the percentage deficit of roughly 174 points combined), Tasmania, Frankston and Coburg all lose; 5th if one wins; 6th if two win; 7th if three win; 8th if all four win. The Bombers must win by roughly 121 more than Frankston, 73 more than Coburg and 43 more than GWS to catch their percentage. Port Melbourne can overtake if they win by 54 more than the Bombers to make up the percentage deficit.
IF THEY LOSE: 9th if Port Melbourne, Williamstown and Carlton all lose; 10th if one wins; 11th if two win; 12th if all three win. The Bombers must lose by roughly 106 points less than the Dolphins, 64 less than the Lions and 44 less than the Giants to catch their percentage. Port Melbourne can overtake if it loses by 62 less than the Bombers to make up the percentage deficit. Carlton has a significantly better percentage than all teams above it and would go ahead of any losers with a win.
SUMMARY: Five terrific wins in a row has the Bombers well poised to play finals, with more momentum than every other team in contention. A win over Sydney ensures they make it, but defeat will likely mean an uncomfortable night’s sleep unless Port Melbourne and Williamstown have also gone down. If they make it, they’ve earned it.
PREDICTION: 10-8 (11th)

PORT MELBOURNE

10th, 10-7, 95.37%
STREAK: Won 1 (2026: WLLLWWbWLWWbLWWWLbLW)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: def Richmond (14, ETU Stadium); lost Frankston (30, Frankston Park); lost Werribee (38, Avalon Airport Oval); def Sandringham (11, ETU Stadium); def Casey Demons (18, Casey Fields)
TO COME: 16.Collingwood (2.05pm Saturday, ETU Stadium)
IF THEY WIN: Will pass the losers of GWS v Tasmania and Essendon v Sydney; 5th if Box Hill Hawks (by enough to cover the percentage deficit of roughly 218 points combined), Frankston and Coburg all lose; 6th if one wins; 7th if two win; 8th if all three win. The Borough must win by roughly 162 more than Frankston, 119 more than Coburg, 92 more than GWS and 54 more than Essendon to catch their percentage.
IF THEY LOSE: 10th if Williamstown and Carlton both lose; 11th if one wins; 12th if both win. The Borough must lose by roughly 163 points less than the Dolphins, 119 less than the Lions, 107 less than the Giants and 62 less than the Bombers to catch their percentage. Carlton has a significantly better percentage than all teams above it and would go ahead of any losers with a win.
SUMMARY: Having such a weak percentage means they won’t pass any other team that wins. Playing last on Saturday means they’ll during their match exactly what their situation is. If Williamstown wins, a loss to Collingwood will end the Borough’s season. A Seagulls loss allows them to barrack hard for Footscray on Sunday morning.
PREDICTION: 11-7 (7th)

WILLIAMSTOWN.

11th, 9-7-1, 104.16%
STREAK: Lost 1 (2026: WWbWLWWbLLLWWLLDWbWL)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: lost Coburg (15, DSV Stadium); def Sandringham (51, Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval); def Tasmania (6, DSV Stadium); drew Sydney (0, Blacktown International Sports Park); lost Footscray (41, DSV Stadium)
TO COME: 6.Frankston (12.05pm Saturday, DSV Stadium)
IF THEY WIN: Will overtake Frankston. 6th if Coburg, GWS, Essendon and Port Melbourne all lose; 7th if one wins; 8th if two win; 9th if three win; 10th if all four win. Hail Mary … will overtake Sydney (roughly 295 points combined) and Tasmania (109) if they can make up the percentage deficits.
IF THEY LOSE: 11th if Carlton loses; 12th if it wins. Southport (roughly 157 points combined) can overtake if it wins and makes up the percentage deficit.
SUMMARY: The equation is simple for the Seagulls. Win and they will play finals, with the position dependent on other results. Lose and it’s all over for them and successful outgoing coach Justin Plapp.
PREDICTION: 11-6-1 (8th)

CARLTON

12th, 9-8, 110.35%
STREAK: Lost 1 (2026: bLLWWWWWLLLbLLWWbWWL)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: lost St Kilda (7, RSEA Park); def Brisbane Lions (60, Ikon Park); def Gold Coast (17, Ikon Park); def Box Hill Hawks (23, Box Hill City Oval); def Richmond (35, Ikon Park)
TO COME: 14.Footscray (10.35am Sunday, Mission Whitten Oval)
IF THEY WIN: Will overtake the loser of Williamstown v Frankston; 7th if Coburg, GWS, Essendon and Port Melbourne all lose; 8th if one wins; 9th if two win; 10th if three win; 11th if all four win.
IF THEY LOSE: 12th if they lose by less than 12 points and Southport loses; 13th if one happens; 14th if both do.
SUMMARY: The Blues shot themselves in the foot last week and now need to win and rely on at least one other result going their way to play finals. They will know where they stand before they run out on Sunday morning.
PREDICTION: 9-9 (13th)

SOUTHPORT

13th, 8-8-1, 93.91%
STREAK: Lost 1 (2026: LWWLbWLWWbLLLWLbDWWL)

TO COME: 7.Coburg (12.05pm Saturday, Barry Plant Park)
IF THEY WIN: 11th if Williamstown loses and they make up roughly 157 points to overtake the percentage deficit, and Carlton also loses; 12th if one happens; 13th if both do.
IF THEY LOSE: 13th if Footscray and St Kilda lose; 14th if one wins; 15th if both win.
SUMMARY: The injuries finally caught up with the Sharks in spectacular fashion last week. They’ll be back next year.
PREDICTION: 8-9-1 (15th)

FOOTSCRAY

14th, 8-9, 108.59%
STREAK: Won 1 (2026: WbWWLLbLLWLLLbWLWWLW)

IF THEY LOSE: 14th if St Kilda loses; 15th if the Saints win; Collingwood can overtake if it wins and makes up the percentage deficit (roughly 146 points combined).
SUMMARY: The premiership defence finishes on Sunday, but the Bulldogs can still take Carlton down with them.
PREDICTION: 9-9 (12th)

ST KILDA

15th, 7-9-1, 99.04%
STREAK: Won 1 (2026: LLLWLLWWbWWDWbLLLLbW)
PAST FIVE MATCHES: def Carlton (7, RSEA Park); lost Collingwood (10, La Trobe University); lost Geelong (26, RSEA Park); lost Werribee (1, RSEA Park); lost Essendon (25, Windy Hill)
TO COME: 21.Richmond (2.05pm Saturday, RSEA Park)
IF THEY WIN: 13th if Southport and Footscray lose; 14th if one wins; 15th if both win.
IF THEY LOSE: 15th if Collingwood loses; 16th if the Magpies win; North Melbourne can overtake if it wins and makes up the percentage deficit (roughly 86 points)
SUMMARY: Another win would make it a successful first season back in the League.
PREDICTION: 8-9-1 (14th)

COLLINGWOOD

16th, 7-10, 98.44%
STREAK: Lost 1 (2026: bLWLWLLLLLWbLWLWbWWL)

IF THEY LOSE: 16th if North Melbourne loses; 17th if the Kangaroos win; Casey Demons would need to win and make up a roughly 272-point percentage deficit to overtake.
SUMMARY: A disappointing year for the Magpies, but they can hang their hat on beating Geelong, and can also knock Port Melbourne out of the finals.
PREDICTION: 7-11 (16th)

NORTH MELBOURNE

TO COME: 1.Geelong (12.05pm Sunday, Arden St)
IF THEY WIN: 15th if St Kilda (plus making up a roughly 86-point percentage deficit) and Collingwood both lose; 16th if one happens; 17th if neither does.
IF THEY LOSE: 17th if Casey Demons lose; 18th if the Demons win.
SUMMARY: Wouldn’t the Roos love to finish with a massive upset against the minor premiers?
PREDICTION: 6-11-1 (16th)

CASEY DEMONS.

18th, 6-11, 82.46%
