Origin bombshell as Slater quits QLD role

Billy Slater has stepped down as Queensland's State of Origin coach.

After five series at the helm, the 43-year old said it had not been an easy decision to walk away from leading a side he had "idolized" as a child.

Slater was appointed as Paul Green's successor in 2022 and won three of five titles overall.

"From being a boy who idolized this team, to a player, to guiding a group that has inspired our State, this has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my life," Slater said.

"I want to thank the players, this group gave everything for the jersey, for each other and our State, and I’m proud of what we’ve built together.

“To the staff, and to the QRL for the opportunity to lead this team, thank you.

“And to my fellow Queenslanders, thank you for the trust you put in me to be our coach.

"Being a Queenslander has always been a huge part of who I am, and that will never change.”

Since taking up his position with the QRL, Slater has long been viewed by many as the likely successor to take over from Craig Bellamy when he chooses to leave and coach his former club, the Melbourne Storm.

Reacting to the news on air on SEN’s The Run Home with Joel and Fletch, Reni Maitua believes it now opens the doors for a succession plan to take place.

Maitua: “Storm.”

Justin Horo: “You think he is going to the Storm?”

Maitua: “Well, yeah. He's been an outstanding coach for the Maroons.”

 “That just opens up the door for me for potentially taking over from Bellyache.”

Bellamy, whose contract concludes in 2028, has said he would coach next season.
