St Kilda has ultimately missed out on any form of finals footy in what David Schwarz has labelled a “miserable fail”.

The Saints secured a selection of off-season coups entering 2026, with Tom De Koning, Jack Silvagni, Sam Flanders and Liam Ryan all joining the club amid a serious push for immediate results under Ross Lyon.

However, despite the club’s lofty ambitions, a spread of injury concerns and an inability to put away games sees the Saints on the outside once more.

And following the Blues’ draw with the Bulldogs, St Kilda have officially been knocked out of September contention with just 10 wins from 22 games.

Accounting for their major spending and elevated aspirations, ‘The Ox’ believes their 2026 campaign was nothing short of a “miserable fail”.

“When you are as bullish as you were in the offseason and you believe that your pieces of the puzzle were pulling together, they weren’t talking missing the Wildcard,” The Ox told SEN WA Breakfast.

“They were talking top six. When you’re talking internally top six and you finish 11th or potentially even lower, that is a miserable failure.

“It’s miserable in a lot of ways. Last week against Carlton put a big exclamation mark of where St Kilda have been.

“They’ve lost too many players to injury; they haven’t been able to get anyone right.

“I’m not just saying miserable fail on the field, but I think they’ve failed miserably off the field as well in getting their players ready.”

St Kilda remain at home for their final game of the season, facing off against the Gold Coast Suns in a rather blunt Thursday night contest at Marvel Stadium.
