Trade Bell: Suns set to make call on out-of-contract Jamarra

The Trade Bell returned this week and was rung once more on Saturday afternoon.

SEN's Tom Morris provided the latest on a range of moving deals, with out-of-contract stars and wantaway talents assessing their options ahead of the off-season.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan

"The Suns are leaning towards a one-year deal," Morris told SEN Crunch Time.

"This still needs board approval, which is unusual for a one-year deal, but the uniqueness of the situation with Jamarra means that he has to tick every box on the way through.

"What sort of checks and balances does he need is the question that is being asked at the moment internally.

"He was on a very tight leash this year in terms of being honest and transparent about the way he has been living and training in his private life as well.

"They broadly felt as if he was good this year. They would like him to be fitter for next year if he can come back.

"The next question is, do they relax those stipulations at board level for 2027.

"If I had to choose now, I think Jamarra does get a one-year deal at the Gold Coast Suns, no more than that."

Tim Membrey

"Tim Membrey, who had the final kick, is working towards a one-year deal, with Jeremy Howe having re-signed in recent days.

"They've lost a few, including Pendlebury, but it looks like Membrey is going to stay, which is good news."

Zak Butters

"Zak Butters is the biggest story of this trade period.

"There is a very real world where Zak Butters doesn't formally nominate a club, either at all or at least, until very late in the piece.

"Geelong is ahead on this, but if the Cats can't get the draft picks early to satisfy Port Adelaide, then I think Butters would happily go to the Dogs.

"If the Dogs don't have the draft picks, that's when Richmond comes in as well. They've got two picks in the top 20, so they have the best draft hand as it is.

"Richmond is offering the most money; more than $2 million a year across nine years. But the Dogs aren't far behind from that - a tick under $2 million, also for nine years.

"The Cats have never attempted to pay this much for a player in the club's history, so there is money on the table wherever he goes.

"Being successful is his number one priority. Ideally, it doesn't get messy, and ideally for him, he doesn't go into the National Draft and Port Adelaide are compensated."

Rowan Marshall

"Linked to the Zak Butters situation is Rowan Marshall.

"Geelong and the Dogs are also keen on Rowan Marshall. He is keen on Geelong and the Dogs.

"He has a year remaining on his contract so it remains to be seen whether the Saints let him out - but the Saints have interest in Sam De Koning as a part of that deal.

"Both are contracted until the end of 2027, and I do know that Geelong are open to the conversation if Marshall wants to go to them, to send De Koning back the other way and link him with his brother, Tom."

Zane Duursma

"Zane Duursma is a high draft pick at North Melbourne, he has been there for three years and they've offered a two-year deal on more money than what Melbourne are offerning.

"If he does leave North Melbourne, it won't be a cash grab if there is such a thing. It would just be for an opportunity and a fresh start.

"Essendon is also around the mark. They've asked the question, clearly his brother is there as well. They've got some close friendship connections as well, so I wouldn't rule Essendon out completely.

"The front-runner for Zane Duursma if he decides to leave North Melbourne, is Melbourne."

Calsher Dear

"Calsher Dear has a two-year deal on the table from Hawthorn. Four years from Melbourne.

"Geelong, Collingwood and Carlton are also keen. If he is going to go to Carlton, he is waiting on Joel Amartey to see what he wants to do.

"He is waiting on Jesse Hogan to see what he wants to do as well. All options are on the table.

"He has caught up with the Demons. It's hard to read which way this one is going other than Melbourne is the one that has formally offered the longest term deal at the moment."

Joel Amartey

"Joel Amartey wants to stay at the Sydney Swans. His preference is to stay and play for Sydney next year.

"The difference with Joel Amartey is that there is big money being offered elsewhere, particularly at Carlton. There's a gap at the moment.

"If the Swans can narrow that gap, he would stay at Sydney. Five-year deal at the Swans, five-year deal at Carlton."

Zach Merrett

"Zach Merrett still wants to get to Hawthorn. He is in good, constant dialogue with Mark McVeigh, who spoke on SEN very openly about his desire to treat Zach Merrett with respect on the way out.

"The Bombers have softened big time on this. Andrew Welsh last year said that it was his call and that he won't be going anywhere.

"This year, it's Mark McVeigh and the list management's call. I think a first and second rounder ends up getting it done.

"The difference is that Hawthorn have three second rounders; one from the Giants, one from St Kilda and their own as well - I think a combination of those selections (including a first rounder) end up getting it done.

"I'd be surprised if Zach Merrett isn't playing for Hawthorn next year."

Jesse Hogan

"Gold Coast have interest. He has had a zoom with them. He has also had a zoom with Carlton.

"He met with Collingwood at their HQ. I wouldn't be surprised if Melbourne ask the question as well.

"Wherever he goes, he'll get a multi-year deal. Maybe three years. It won't be as a delisted free agent; this will be a trade for a late pick."

Toby Greene

"Toby Greene, GWS or Geelong. He still hasn't caught up with the Cats; he is intending to do so.

"It is just between those two clubs."

Jake Stringer

"There is a strong chance Jake Stringer won't be on an AFL list next year.

"There's not a lot of interest for Jake Stringer at the moment."

Zac Bailey

"It's a huge week for Zac Bailey. It's fair to say that the feeling from those close to him at the Lions has gone form supremely confident to concerned.

"I do think the reports from a couple of months ago claiming that he would stay were premature. I said so at the time.

"I think it is more likely that he goes to the Crows now, but it's a big seven days.

"If he doesn't sign in the next week, then I think he's going to Adelaide."
