King: Why Carlton can't write off trading Weitering

While many would baulk at the notion of Carlton trading the likes of Jacob Weitering this off-season, David King is adamant “no one should be off limits” when it comes to team evolution.

It’s not the first time this year that King has pointed to Weitering as a possible out at the Blues despite being signed until 2031.

With their season looking like an early write-off back in April, Weitering’s name was often thrown up in trade conversations when footy media attempted to diagnose the issues at the Blues.

So what about now that their season has gone from being on life support to setting up an elimination final against Geelong?

King has doubled down.

“Weitering, he was brilliant on the weekend, he and Dean shut them down. They formed a good combo now but I would still investigate trading,” he said on SEN Fireball.

“Find out what’s available. It’s the same discussion as Charlie Curnow; people say ‘you’re not trading him in your wildest dreams, he’s won 2 Colemans’, well now he’s won three and are Carlton better placed for it or not?

“You have to explore things, ideally you sell high, that’s the aim.

“Sell high, buy low. Whether they do it or not is up to them, but I would look into it. No one is off limits.”

Weitering is not the only name put forward as a trade option by the Fireball team with Kane Cornes calling out Harrison Petty.

Two years ago, Adelaide are believed to have offered two first round picks in exchange for the Demons forward. A bullet dodged according to Cornes.

“I’m not sure what Petty was doing (on Saturday),” Cornes said.

“This is what annoys me the most; he puffs his chest out and gets in the face of the opposition, he wants tonight and verbally attack people, and then when it’s his time he goes to water too often.

“Toughen up, the most predictable things I’ve ever seen is him faltering in final, they should have traded him two years ago, I would certainly look to trade him this year.

“He’s looked good in meaningless games or against weaker oppositions. He kicked 26 goals whoop-de-doo, too often he lets you down, I’d be trading him.”
