"Dead set pants them": Beiwacht claims dominant Memsie Stakes victory

The first Victorian Group 1 race for the 2026/27 racing season has been run and won, with Beiwacht claiming first place in the Memsie Stakes.

The Chris Waller-trained bay stallion was dominant in a star-studded field, having won the race by over three lengths. The victory at Caulfield sees the four-year-old claim his third Group 1 win at the 1400m mark.

Following Beiwacht was Mr Brightside, who took second place, with Cosmic Crusader, fresh off its PB Lawrence Stakes win at the same racecourse two weeks ago, finishing in third.

SEN Track’s Saturday Trackside crew of Josh Jenkins, David Taggart and Sammy Hyland reflected on his victory, with Jenkins particularly impressed by Beiwacht’s performance.

But Hyland was left disappointed by the result due to the lack of competition that the other runners provided the horse ridden by Nash Rawiller.

Jenkins: “He just got everything, (doesn’t) he?"

Taggart: “Who had the white cap there, Birdman? Made up some ground along the fence. He was good.”

Jenkins: “There are others all finished in a bunch, to be honest.”

Taggart: “How good is (Mr) Brightside? How good is Brightside?”

Hyland: “To be fair, you've gotta say, I look at that and go that Beiwacht just dead set pants them, right?

“I look at Mr Brightside. He's a superstar…but I mean this is the best Group 1 to kick off our season, right?

“These are the best around, and you like I look at that and go gee whiz, I don't know.”

Jenkins: “But he's made them all look average because if you let him do that, his 1400 metre form, that's what he did in the Golden Rose and that's what he did in Sydney in his other Group 1 win.”
