"This club needs a coach who can coach for the modern game.”

How about two coaches, Sonja Hood?

It’s amazing how quickly the sacked coach cycle spins. One minute Hood and Todd Viney are explaining North Melbourne’s decision to sack Alastair Clarkson. And the next? There’s a list of “24 head coach candidates.”

They’ll be all sorts of speculation envelop this appointment over the next couple of months.

So, let’s just rip the band-aid off on an idea.

Could Adam Simpson and John Longmire do it together? If not, why not?

Because it’s never been done? Because it’s radical? Because it would need serious corroboration between all parties?

Yep, all of that.

But footy is an ever-evolving industry of new concepts, new ideas and fresh approaches. Of clubs thinking outside the square to get a jump on the competition.

And if any duo could make it work, it would be a pair of Kangaroos legends who have an excellent relationship.

One to be “coach” and other to be “director of coaching” or whatever you wanted to call it. One to be the front man and the other to be the architect. One to be the game-day voice and the other to do the heavy lifting during the week.

Whatever the particulars look like, why couldn’t it be done?

Simmo and Horse. Horse and Simmo.

Neither entertained the job on AFL 360 during the week. But neither said they weren’t interested, either.

“My first reaction would be it’s just happened today. Let’s let the dust settle,” Longmire said.

Simpson? “It’s all a bit of a shock. I can’t take my headspace out of him (Clarko) and what he’s going through. To be brutally honest, I haven’t given it a lot of thought.

“It’s just a bit early to talk about what we perceive as an opportunity versus a mate who’s lost his job.”

Both have been pursued by North Melbourne before.

Both have spoken of the sentimental pull of Arden Street.

Could both end up being appointed?
