“It'd kill me”: Greene reveals biggest concern over potential exit

With inaugural Giant and club captain Toby Greene weighing up where he’ll play in 2027, the star forward has revealed his biggest worry about potentially leaving GWS.

Since being drafted by the expansion club in 2011 ahead of their first season, the 32-year-old has spent his entire 281-game career in orange, charcoal and white.

Throughout his time, Greene has achieved plenty of accolades, having won two Kevin Sheedy Medals (club best and fairest award) and three All-Australian selections.

But the one thing that has eluded the 2023 All-Australian Captain has been a premiership.

Having come close on more than one occasion, the potential honour of being the first captain to achieve the feat for GWS is not lost on him.

However, following a 2026 season which saw the NSW club miss finals for the first time under Adam Kingsley, alongside plenty of interest from perennial contender Geelong, Greene is faced with a tough choice in the coming weeks.

Speaking about the possibility of going to Geelong only for GWS to win the premiership in 2027, akin to Brett Deledio’s move from Richmond to the Giants in the 2016 off-season, Greene admitted that possibility does weigh on his mind.

“That's the biggest possibility, that's the biggest one that weighs on me, to be honest,” Greene told AFL Nation.

“In terms of the Giants, knowing I've put every last ounce of effort into that club, asking boys to stay pretty much for the last 10 years.

“I've been a big part of that, trying to build the culture that Wardy (Callan Ward) and Luke Power and Chad Cornes and Phil Davis started and then being captain the last five years and trying to really develop young players.

“I think there's some big potential for a few of them and if I was to miss out on that, it'd kill me.

“I'd be shattered.”

Greene is an unrestricted free agent, meaning the Cats would not have to part ways with any draft capital.

The free agency window opens on October 2 and closes on October 9.
