Premiership coach to the Roos?

Adam Simpson is considering making a run for North Melbourne’s top job.

The West Coast premiership coach and dual Kangaroos premiership player has spent recent days doing his due diligence on a romantic return to Arden Street.

While Simpson has not yet declared his hand, it is an advancement from a week ago when he spoke in the wake of Alastair Clarkson’s sacking.

“I haven't given it a lot of thought... it's a bit early to talk about what we perceive as an opportunity versus a mate who has lost his job," Simpson told AFL 360.

Despite speculation the Kangaroos were favouring a first-time coach in their search, the club has contacted both long-time assistant coaches and ex-senior coaches in the past seven days.

Upon announcing a six-person coach selection panel, North Melbourne would only say it wanted “a person with recent and relevant AFL coaching experience from successful environments”.

“Candidates will need a proven track record in demonstrating outstanding leadership, relationship building, communication, and education,” the statement read.

“Specific role information will be provided to individuals who express interest in the position and who meet the selection criteria.”

The likes of Jaymie Graham, Corey Enright, Daniel Pratt and Daniel Giansiracusa are expected to be among the highly-rated assistant coaches to be sounded out. Simpson and John Longmire headline the ex-coach delegation.

The North Melbourne coaching panel, chaired by chief executive Jennifer Watt, includes head of football Todd Viney, director Andrew Swallow, AFLW coach Darren Crocker, vice-president Nick Dowling and recently retired Magpie Steele Sidebottom.
