Freedman confident in Wolf Gap ahead of 1400m test

The Freedman stable is heading into the weekend with plenty of confidence, where Wolf Gap, American Eagle, Point Barrow and Tom Kitten are among the runners catching their eye.

Sam Freedman joined Gareth Hall on SEN Track & RSN'S Giddy Up to talk through his stables key chances.

Wolf Gap

Wolf Gap will step up to 1400m following an encouraging last-start effort, with the gelding set to benefit from a favourable draw as he looks to settle closer in the run.

Freedman believes Wolf Gap is continuing to build nicely and expects further improvement from the gelding, with the 1400m distance also giving him confidence.

“He should settle closer than last start from the nice gate,” Freedman said.

“He’s building nicely and looks to have plenty of improvement ahead of him.

“Out of him and American Eagle, I’ve got more confidence in Wolf Gap running out a strong 1400m.”

American Eagle

American Eagle is another runner capable of making his presence felt, with Freedman pointing to the horse’s natural gate speed and his faith in jockey Mark Zahra.

“He has some good gate speed if he wants to use it and I have faith in the way Mark Zahra rides out horses,” Freedman explained.

"There's a bit against him, he has to go from the wet track to a firm track.

"He has also got that sticky gate but he is a progressive horse and he'll be hard to beat."

Point Barrow

Zahra will also take the reins aboard Point Barrow, with Freedman believing the mare is going well enough to overcome any concerns surrounding her barrier.

“Barriers for her are probably not as significant compared to others,” Freedman outlined.

“She’s a very good mare, she’s going very well and this looks the most straightforward race for her for a while, but we do have a lot of respect for the favourite Bridal Waltz who looks well weighted.”

Tom Kitten

Freedman is not concerned with the weight and draw, confident the gelding can make his presence felt if required to produce a searching run.

“I don’t think the weight will stop him and I think he can run very well,” Freedman said.

“I don’t mind the draw because he’s ready now to make a long searching run if needed.

“The market is disrespecting him in my view.”

Sam indicated that for his $100 staking plan he would take Wolf Gap and American Eagle to both run top 3 in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.
