The Melbourne Renegades have landed Jonny Bairstow for the 2026/27 BBL|16 season and the Englishman is more than ready to play the villain this summer.

The two-time World Cup winner and 100-Test star said he is relishing the opportunity to return to Australia and finally have the home crowd supporting him.

“I know there’s been a bit of history over the years and I’m sure I’ll hear plenty about it when I get over there. That’s part of the fun of it," Bairstow said.

“I’ve always loved playing in Australia. The crowds are passionate and I’ve always enjoyed that side of the contest.

“I’m really excited about joining the Renegades. Having the MCG as our home ground is pretty special and I’m looking forward to getting out there, playing the way I play and hopefully entertaining the fans."

While Bairstow is yet to retire from international cricket, he has not been selected by England since 2024 which paved the way for his maiden BBL stint after a 2020 deal with the Stars fell over.

Bairstow's name is etched in cricket history in Australia, not for his performances and centuries across three Ashes tours but for the infamous stumping by Alex Carey at Lord's in 2023 which sparked enormous controversy and debate about "the spirit of the game".

Referencing the furore, Bairstow told News Corp: "The reception will probably be quite fun at times. It’s not something that being an Englishman you’re averse to when you’re over in Oz. So yeah, it’ll be great fun.”

The 37-year-old is not the only big name making their way from England to Australia this summer with Ben Stokes also confirmed to be playing for the Strikers.
