The Trade Period is well and truly underway, with plenty of clubs making moves to improve their list for 2027 and beyond.
Since the Free Agency Period began on October 2, several stars have been on the move, with Lachie Neale, Zak Butters, Zach Merrett and Ben King all finding new clubs to seek success with.
With the Trade deadline now in sight, former Carlton coach Michael Voss has named the three clubs that have elevated themselves to put themselves with the Brisbane Lions as a premiership contender.
Speaking after Geelong completed the trade for St Kilda ruckman Rowan Marshall to add to their growing list of additions, the three-time premiership captain for Brisbane thinks Geelong, alongside Hawthorn with the additions of Zach Merrett and Ben King and the Western Bulldogs following the free agency acquisition of Zak Butters, have added depth to their lists.
As a result, Voss thinks these sides can close the gap to the reigning back-to-back-to-back premiers.
“There are these three clubs, Hawthorn, Geelong and the Dogs that have, through their trading have been able to elevate their list and their opportunities,” Voss told AFL Trade Radio.
“They've been able to plug holes on their list, but also, what it'll (do) is make (the) players around them better.
“Not only will it help, clearly, Geelong's midfield area and their clearance game, which sometimes is not necessarily their strength.
“They sort of rely on other parts of their game to obviously generate, but that'll certainly help them enormously to be able to put them in that top echelon of teams.
“Everyone's trying to chase Brisbane. How do you get ahead of Brisbane?
“And to do that, you're gonna have to have depth, and they have enormous depth through their midfield, Brisbane.
“I know they lost Lachie Neale, but their depth to be able to throw the next player at you is one of their real strengths.
“So, teams are going to have to try and close that gap and bridge that gap against Brisbane, and I think there is three football clubs that have managed to do that.
There’s still time for several clubs to make more additions to their side with the Trade Period concluding on October 14 (this Wednesday) at 7:30pm AEDT.
