Australia have taken a 1-nil series lead against South Africa, having won the First Test overnight by 214 runs.

Here are the five main talking points from the fifth and final day of action at Durban.

Hazlewood takes career-best figures to skittle South Africa as Australia takes a 1-0 series lead

The Hoff was in fine form, finishing with 6/49 in the second innings as the Aussies steamrolled the Proteas within an hour after lunch. A brilliant double wicket-maiden that removed the dangerous Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer was pure fire, and set the tone for the rest of the series. Australia will have their tails up as they head to Gqeberha where they’ll look to sew up the series and claim the first of the “four majors” of this 12-month cricket odyssey.

Alex Carey takes a screamer to open the game up

Markram and Mulder had dug in and had eyes on getting to lunch. Enter Alex Carey, who took an absolute screamer diving to his left to remove Mulder after he feathered one down the leg side. From there Australia was all set to storm to victory.

Matt Renshaw’s Test

Australia’s newest star couldn’t stay out of the action on Day Five, taking a second wicket to remove Kyle Verreynne. No Australian has made as many runs in a Test whilst taking two wickets as Renshaw did in Durban. He was a deserved Player of the Match.

Steve Smith fit to play for Second Test

In great news, the Australian superstar was cleared of concussion and took his place on the field for day five, getting in on the action with yet another slips catch. It means there’s less question marks about how the Australian batting line-up will look in Gqeberha, with Josh Inglis and Cameron Green potentially pushing for selection.

What changes for South Africa?

Kagiso Rabada looks set to return to the South African side for the Second Test, but who’ll make way? Will it be one of the spinners, or could they rest Anrich Nortje? From a batting perspective, Ryan Rickelton looks the most vulnerable at the top of the order after scores of 0 and 2.

Australia will look to clinch the series when the Second Test gets underway on October 18 at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).

SEN will have every ball live across our radio network and on the SEN app from 6pm AEDT.
