“Unfinished business”: Reasons for Green's Giants stay

Gun midfielder Tom Green, just a week ago, signed a two-year extension with GWS.

The 25-year-old was due to come out of contract in 2027, but put pen to paper until the end of 2029 to commit himself to the Giants for the short term.

Green was the subject of interest from the incoming Tasmania Devils with some reporting he’d be on $2 million a year if made the move south.

While the overtures were nice, Green says there’s still plenty he wants to achieve with the Giants.

“That was, I suppose, the main thinking about it. It was just to get it out of the way and sort of move on so we can really sink our teeth into the next year and the years beyond,” Green said on SEN Breakfast.

“So it is really exciting and stoked to be a Giant.

“I never went down to Tasmania and toured the state or anything like that, but I think it'd be sort of remiss of going through the process and probably not doing it properly if you didn't have those conversations.

“In the end I felt like there was just a bit of unfinished business at the Giants I'm not ready to walk away from yet.

“It's a club that's invested a lot in me since I was a kid through their Academy and I feel like I've still got something to continue to pay back to them.”

Many in Green’s position might have signed a much longer term deal to show their commitment.

However, he stopped short of diving right in, saying the two-year extension comes amid some improvements he wants to see from the club.

“While I do love the Giants and have absolutely loved them, and as I said, I do feel like there's unfinished business here,” Green, who missed the entire 2026 with an ACL injury, added.

“But I think we'd be kidding ourselves if we said we're doing everything right. The reality is we haven't won a premiership yet and that's what motivates me every single day to get my knee right and what I'm planning to give the absolute best of my ability.

“We haven't quite got over the hump yet and I think that we do a lot right but I think there's some stuff that we do need to tinker with and just tweak a little bit. think once we do that we can get there, but I think we also need to make sure that those sort of changes happen.

“It's obviously hard to know (exactly what to change). Unfortunately, I'm not allowed inside the four walls of Brisbane.

“But I think it's gathering as much information around what they do, what's cutting edge. They're doing a little bit better than the rest of the competition and implementing that because, like I said, I think if we were doing that right, we'd be winning a few flags.

“We obviously had not a great year this year and the years before that we’ve fallen short of where we would have liked to go. So we just need to make sure that we do make those changes.”

Green is seen by many as the next GWS captain following the departure of Toby Greene to Geelong.

He is in the mix alongside the likes of Connor Idun, Jack Buckley and Sam Taylor, but admits he is unsure which way it will fall.

“My belief the whole time about that has been that it's not really about what I want. It's about what my teammates want,” Green said further.

“I think it's really hard for the club to put in a captain that the playing group doesn't want to run out behind. So I'm not sure what the club is thinking, but I think whoever the players want to be led by and want to run out behind, I think that's the right person.

“In the past, yes, we have done a vote. As far as I'm aware, I'm expecting that's how it's going to go again.”

Green is continuing to rehab his knee injury, and although he admits he wouldn't be ready to run out today, he says everything is tracking as well as it could be.
