Australian F1 champion Alan Jones dies aged 80

Australia's last Formula One champion Alan Jones has died just three days after his 80th birthday.

In 1980, Jones became only the second Australian driver to ever win the F1 title after Sir Jack Brabham.

Melbourne born, Jones was swept up in driving from a young age with his father Stan an amateur racer.

During his career Jones started 116 grands prix, had 12 victories to his name and 24 podiums.

He made his driving debut for Hesketh in 1975 before enjoying stints with Hill, Surtees, Shadow, Williams, Arrows and Haas.

It was his five race victories at tracks in Argentina, France, Britain, Canada and the USA which earned him the title in 1980.

Despite the efforts of Mark Webber, Daniel Ricciardo and Oscar Piastri, no Australian has been crowned F1 champion since Jones.

Jones was inducted in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.
