We need to ask the right Carlton questions: McClure

2018-05-21T19:00+10:00

SEN Time On host Sam McClure says we need to start asking the right questions about Carlton.

The Blues have been under the microscope since the weekend’s 109-point loss to Melbourne, with many questioning if their rebuild is heading in the right direction.

However, McClure believes those general statements puts the conversation out of focus, saying the actual football mechanics of how Brendon Bolton’s men play is the more appropriate discussion.

WHAT WILL BLUES 2020 TEAM LOOK LIKE?

THE “CATASTROPHIC” SITUATION BLUES COULD FACE

“This is a criticism of the general rhetoric that comes out every time Carlton gets smashed and we have to get better at this,” he told SEN’s Time On.

“Carlton are going to get smashed again under Brendon Bolton, and it may be this week down at the Cattery. But they are not two and a half years into a rebuild.

“The rebuild didn’t start when Brendon Bolton was hired, it is still going. How do we know this? Because the club has told us, they told us when they traded their best player Bryce Gibbs to Adelaide last year for a strong return of high draft picks, a good trade for Carlton.

“Does this mean we shouldn’t be critical of poor results? Absolutely not, but we should be putting the spotlight on coaching and player performance each week.

“To give an example, the questions coming out of today should have been, Carlton lost contested possessions by 19 yesterday, but the clearances were even. What does that say about the general hunger on the footy?

“They conceded 19 marks inside 50 yesterday, this is a team that Brendon Bolton in his first year had playing very structured, defensive and disciplined football.

“They conceded 19 marks inside 50, essentially five a quarter. That’s not good enough but these are the questions we should be asking.

“It is time we start asking the right questions about Carlton. The rebuild discussion, for me, has grown very tiresome.”

The Blues will look to bounce back this Saturday against Geelong.
