Hardwick poaches Geelong assistant in major coaching coup

2023-09-11T13:28+10:00

Gold Coast has pulled off the assistant coach coup of the off-season so far, luring contracted Geelong assistant Shaun Grigg to the Suns.

Grigg, who had a deal in place until the end of 2024 at GMHBA Stadium, has agreed to join Damien Hardwick as a senior assistant coach.

Good judges who have worked with Grigg believe he all the attributes to be a senior coach eventually and his move to Gold Coast is seen as a logical progression in that pursuit.

As reported by Sam Edmund, Hardwick and the Suns targeted Grigg several weeks ago, but it was only on Monday that the premiership Tiger confirmed his desire to link up with his former mentor in Queensland.

It’s understood Grigg loved his time at Geelong, where he has been since late 2019.

Vacancies are beginning to open up on the assistant couching carousel. The Western Bulldogs are hunting three assistants, while West Coast are also looking to fill spots.

All of Hawthorn’s assistants are contracted for 2024, but a position will open up if Chris Newman wins the Richmond gig.

Brett Ratten has departed North Melbourne and Andrew McQualter was noncommittal when Sarah Olle asked him on SEN whether he’d stay at Punt Road if he missed out on the permanent top job.
