Collingwood disappointed, but open to keeping Adams after Sydney trade request

Collingwood GM of footy Graham Wright admits the club is disappointed by the trade request of Taylor Adams.

The 30-year-old informed the Magpies on Sunday that he would like a trade to the Sydney Swans this trade period.

REPORT: ADAMS INFORMS COLLINGWOOD OF TRADE WISH

However, Adams is contracted for 2024 and is deemed a required player, so his trade request would only be granted if the Pies get what they want in return.

“I suppose we’re disappointed, but we understand players have a right to explore,” Wright said on AFL Trade Radio.

“Taylor’s got a year to go (on his contract) so we see him as a required player. We’ve told him that.

“We haven’t had a conversation with Sydney, but he informed us yesterday that he’d like to look at a possible move to Sydney.”

Does Wright see a scenario where Adams remains with the 2023 premiers next year?

“Yeah, well, he’s contracted,” he replied.

“So there’s certainly a way that he stays. The relationship is really strong with Taylor and we’ve had some really good conversations, but he’s requested that trade and we’ll have a look at it.

“But he knows as well that it might not get done and he’s playing with us (in 2024).”

Pick 23 has been floated as one aspect of a possible trade, but Wright insists it is too early in the piece to speculate on what the Swans might be prepared to part with.

“We’ve had a little bit of a look, but we haven’t spoken to Sydney or get their thoughts,” Wright said further.

“There’s always two sides to a trade and I’m not sure what they’re thinking.

“We’ll have our own ideas about what we think is fair and reasonable, but he is part of our leadership group, he would have been playing Grand Final day if he wasn’t injured and he’s contracted, so we’ll see what happens.”

Adams played 23 games for the Pies this year, averaging 18 disposals and leading the club for goal assists with 25 as he played more of a forward-half role.

The Swans are looking for an inside midfielder for next year as they look to bounce back into premiership calculations.
