The good, the bad and the ugly from Round 7

2024-04-30T08:56+10:00

THE GOOD was the dismantling of the Lions by the Giants with three guns out of the team.

They play fast and furious and will be hard to beat at the end of the year.

The match against the Swans on Saturday, one of the games of the round - and there are plenty of them - will be a good audit for where exactly the Swans sit in the pecking order. Genuine contender or improved hopeful?

How Isaac Heeney is allowed to run around by himself is one of the more baffling observations? He was tagged in the second quarter, had just four possessions.

It's certainly food for thought.

The Bombers, they were also very good and the improved, more combative midfield has steeled them as a genuine finals contender.

Finally, their team defence looks sustainable at the top end.

Also good on the ANZAC Day round was the second highest home and away crowd ever.

Now that's good, and a jab in the nose to all those who think the game is floundering.

And finally, the development of players down at Geelong is exceptional.

I didn't think Zach Guthrie would make it when I first saw him and even after a couple of years, I thought it was a struggle, but he's now a genuine star in defence and will be pushing for All-Australian squad inclusion.

Jack Bowes is maturing rapidly and Tanner Bruhn is slowly becoming a genuine midfielder with serious impact. To name just three that have been part of this formula that keeps the Cats at the top.

And the final good nomination goes to Rory Sloane, a true gun who retired on Monday.

THE BAD, well let's start with push in the back.

They're not being paid. It's got better this year but there are a couple of shocking standouts on the weekend.

The Ollie Henry one on Saturday and the Hayden McLean one at the MCG on Sunday were absolute blunders of the highest order.

Let's hope new umpire boss Stephen ‘Jack’ McBurney sorts this out because there's no higher priority than cleaning this mess up.

One dummy demonstrated that he thought it was ok because he used his forearms. Please players, know your rules.

For those who think Henry's was in the side, if you have a hand on one of the numbers on the jumper then that constitutes in the back, and it was a poor mistake by that individual umpire.

THE UGLY, well, that's pretty simple.

Brisbane's second half of no effort gives them a mortgage on the title of worst performance of the weekend by a long margin.

Lots of fingers are being pointed at the coach, but effort is a player's domain and they alone are the ones who can answer the question as to why the effort wasn't there in Canberra.

More importantly, do something about it in the Q-Clash this weekend.

Acting for dangerous tackles is a shocker as Matt Crouch did on the weekend.

That's an ugly part of the game. It needs to desist.

And finally, the final observation of the weekend revolves around the goal review and it includes all three: good, bad and ugly.

It's really good that it's mercifully been changed back.

It's really bad, the damage it did to the umpires' brand.

And it was downright ugly the maladministration at head office that took so long to correct a ridiculous over-correction.
