David King has put the onus on Nick Daicos to “destroy” Hawthorn tagger Finn Maginness on Saturday afternoon.
Maginness has previously had success on the Collingwood star, restricting his influence on games.
Magpies coach Craig McRae dared the Hawks to select him for the game, with Sam Mitchell obliging.
King wants to see Daicos put Maginness to the sword in the midfield without needing to be moved to half back.
“I’m Nick Daicos’ biggest fan, but just get the job done in the middle. Don’t wait for the coach to save your game,” King told SEN Breakfast.
“To have to move you to half-back or half-forward or play games with the opposition’s coaches box because you can’t beat the tag.
“Go and destroy the tag. This is a major part of his growth. He needs to command that midfield.
“Play in the midfield, be the damaging player in the midfield position you are selected to play. Don’t wait for the coach to have to massage the magnets to get you into the game because you’re being clamped.
“Just go and destroy the tag. If he’s the player we think he is. Go and destroy the tag. If taggers can have this effect on him, he will never shake the fact that he gets tagged every week. He needs to blow one apart.”
It looms as an enormous game for both teams, with the Pies and Hawks both sitting just outside the top eight.
