“It’s so surreal”: Why the historic Origin win is still sinking in for Lomax

NSW Blues winger Zac Lomax has admitted the monumental 2024 State of Origin Series win still hasn’t properly sunk in, nearly four days after the marquee event.

Lomax starred in his debut series for the Blues and helped his side in the crucial 14-4 win over the Queensland Maroons on Wednesday night.

Becoming the first side in just under 20 years to win an Origin decider in Brisbane is something so historic that Lomax himself is still coming to grips with.

“It’s pretty cool, it’s pretty surreal, it hasn’t sort of sunk in too much,” Lomax said on SEN 1170 Mower’s Club.

“I was talking to Jake Trbojevic getting off the bus, going into the airport there, he just goes, ‘I don’t think you realise how hard it is what we achieved’.

“He’s played a few up there and lost a few, it’s so surreal, to be able to do it and have all of my family and that up there, in a pretty hostile environment, it’s pretty cool.”

Game III was widely viewed as one of the most brutal games in recent history, as Lomax explained in his recap of the opening exchanges.

“The minute you enter Brisbane you feel it from the fans straight away,” Lomax added.

“The physicality, the speed of the game, it’s through the roof I guess you could see spectating it during the game.

“The clock wasn’t working for almost the first 20 minutes, I was searching it for it everywhere, I watched the clock so closely after every set.

“I remember trying to find the clock, I was thinking to myself there would have to be four or five minutes until halftime and I looked up and there was 21 minutes to go, I was cooked, I was out on my feet, so yeah it broke me a little bit.

“It absolutely lived up to it, the physicality and all of it, it’s unbelievable.”
