Matt Reid’s best bets for Sunday racing at Hobart (21/07)

By Matt Reid

The first of two grass meetings to conclude the 2023/24 thoroughbred season is in Hobart on Sunday, where eight races are scheduled.

The rail moves to +1m after being in true a fortnight ago, and conditions point towards a soft-rated surface.

Best bet

Race 8, No.3 - Zewinna

Sunday’s card looks particularly competitive, with not many shorties. I’ve landed on Zewinna in the last as my best bet. The grey is certainly a mare in form, winning emphatically at the track and distance two starts back, and running well in two subsequent runs. From the pole draw, I expect her to camp just behind the leaders and, from there, should have every chance to notch her fourth win on the Hobart track.

Next best

Race 5, No.3 - Adachi

Off a two-month freshen, Adachi was unlucky in defeat at the track and distance last start. Held up back in the field, he could only flash late for second behind Sandual, who secured the run of the race. The 4YO drops 3kg from that run despite remaining in class 2 company and has the services of Victorian rider Liam Riordan, who was impressive when riding down here a fortnight ago.

Best value

Race 1, No.9 - Steel Connection

It's a limited race to start the day, and I’m sure there will be each-way odds about Steel Connection, who hasn’t started shorter than $71 at her last five runs. There has been some merit to her past couple though, where she’s hunted inside runs with apprentice Catherine Van Munster in the saddle. She’s replaced by Group 1 winning jockey Craig Newitt, who should find a good spot if he jumps well from barrier 3.
