Kane Cornes believes Port Adelaide star Zak Butters is being “unfairly targeted” by MRO Michael Christian.
The 23-year-old surpassed Toby Greene as the most fined player in V/AFL history on the weekend, reaching a total of $36,250.
It comes after he received a $7,500 sanction (down to $5000 with an early plea) for “dropping an unaware James Trezise with a hefty bump a few metres from the play”.
He was then charged a further $1,875 for careless contact with an umpire in the same game – his 17th career fine.
However, Cornes has seen the Trezise incident and believes Christian is disproportionately focused on Power star Butters.
“Zak Butters is being targeted unfairly by Michael Christian and the MRO,” Cornes told SEN’s Sportsday.
“I would be urging Port Adelaide to challenge this. It’s the softest $7,500 fine you’ve ever seen.
“Further to that he was fined again for contact with an umpire – and he got out of the way and the umpire clips his foot.
“Michael Christian has got a target on Zak Butters’ head.”
