“Best possible price”: Jules Vallance’s Pride Of Jenni theory this spring

Jules Vallance believes the Group 1 Memsie Stakes will be the race punters will get the best price for Pride Of Jenni this spring.

The Ciaron Maher-trained star heads to this spring with plenty of hype and spruik around her after a scintillating autumn campaign that saw her become one of the best horses in the country and arguably the world.

Her Queen Elizabeth triumph had to be seen to be believed as jockey Declan Bates led them a merry dance over the 2000m trip to win by over six and a half lengths.

She’s now back in work and looks set to race first-up in the Memsie over 1400m at Caulfield on September 7.

Pride Of Jenni is yet to win first-up from seven starts in her career to date but Vallance believes the Memsie might be the race she breaks her drought upon resumption.

“Pride Of Jenni is a really interesting case,” Vallance told SENTrack.

“Usually with her she was a horse that needed one run and sometimes two and then she got to that full 95+ per cent capacity which we know you have to be when you’re an on speed horse like she is as you can’t be a little bit off at say 70 per cent as you’ll just get found out.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s ready to just go first-up, I’ve just got a feeling that I reckon they’re changing a little bit with her not being softly softly and they’re thinking, ‘we can win this Memsie first-up’, which I think usually they would’ve gone 18 months ago, ‘let’s just have a pipe opener over 1400m and ride her a little bit softly and then second-up we’re going to go whack over 1600m’.

“This is just my personal gut feel that I would think the camp want to go picket fence with her this preparation and to do that they need her completely wound up because that’s her pattern.

“If she is then maybe the Memsie is the race you might get the best possible price about her because everyone might think she’s vulnerable but she might just absolutely whack the hell out of them.”

Pride Of Jenni is currently rated a $2.50 chance in the Memsie ahead of Mr Brightside ($3.50) with I Wish I Win and Via Sistina on the third line of betting at $6.
