Nathan Buckley has explained his decision to not pursue the West Coast coaching job, after it was reported that he had a conversation with club CEO Don Pyke recently.

Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary reported that Buckley knocked back a play for the role, after a 30-minute phone chat.

On SEN Breakfast, Tom Morris quizzed Buckley on how it played out and the ex-Collingwood coach’s feelings about the reporting of it.

Morris: “Why did you say no to West Coast?”

Buckley: “I didn’t say no. I just had a chat with Don Pyke and reinforced to him what I’ve told the world which is that I haven’t got my head around senior coaching. It’s been written that I’ve spurned West Coast’s advance…”

Morris: “But what happened then if you haven’t done that (turned the Eagles down)?”

Buckley: “I had a conversation with them about coaching, and quite a general conversation with a guy who has been in it, out of it and is now CEO of a club, so he is in a really good position to make the right decision around who they’re going to bring in. I haven’t spurned them, I’m just not looking for a role.”

Morris: “Yeah, but at the end of that conversation you’re either progressing and interested in talking more or you’re not. It’s one or the other, and you’re not, so is that really negative reporting? It’s just factual, isn’t it?”

Buckley: “To say I’ve spurned them. You’ve got to be in the market to say no to doing something. West Coast will go and find what they need to find, but I’m just not there.”

Buckley joins the likes of Dean Cox, Jaymie Graham and Josh Carr to rule themselves out of the vacant coaching position at the Eagles.
