If Richmond goes through with what could be a trade period fire sale, they could find themselves entering the National Draft with picks one, six, eight and 13 – according to Josh Jenkins.
The former Adelaide star has mapped it out for the Tigers, with them giving up Jack Graham, Shai Bolton, Liam Baker and Daniel Rioli for the haul of picks.
Bolton, Graham and Baker have all been linked with moves to Western Australia, while Rioli is being courted by Damien Hardwick and Gold Coast.
“There are a handful of players who will leave, should leave or may want to leave. Richmond’s decision is how deep do they cut. My personal view is that if you’re going to be bad anyway, you might as well be really bad,” Jenkins told SEN’s The Run Home.
“It’s going to give your more chance of getting really good quicker and the Tasmanian shadow is there.
“There are really four guys in the mix. Jack Graham is the simplest one, he’s a free agent. I imagine he’ll end up being an end of second round compensation for the Tigers. Either way, they’ll get something handy for him.
“Richmond has currently got pick one already in their back pocket. Daniel Rioli, it’s reported the Suns desperately want him. If I’m Richmond, it’s an ‘if you want him, cough up’.
“Now, Gold Coast has shown the propensity to offer up their early picks because they’ve got so many and they’ve got Academy players to bring in.
“Is there a world where you can trade Rioli and get back pick six and pick 20 – or pick six and pick 12, and send something back to the Suns. Let’s give them six and 12 for Rioli, and they give back the Graham compensation pick.
“Rioli’s probably not worth two first-round picks, but that’s what’s been reported and maybe they pay part of his salary. Gold Coast doesn’t have a lot of good kicks, they need him.
“Liam Baker wants to get back to WA. This is where I’m saying, if you want to get back to WA, that’s fantastic, we’ll work with both teams and come up with the best deal we can.
“Would West Coast be willing to give up pick three for Baker and pick 12? That’s on the proviso that you get 12 for Rioli.
“Let’s say they get it done. They’ve therefore got picks one, three and six.
“Now, Shai Bolton wants to get back to WA and presumably wants to get to Fremantle. The good thing for Freo is they’ve got a few first round picks.
“I think Bolton is carbon copy of the Tim Kelly situation. If you want him, you’ve got to be prepared to pay up. West Coast coughed up two first rounders and a second rounder for Kelly, and that’s the same situation here as far as I’m concerned.
“He’s got a long-term contract, he moves the needle for Richmond, you need him to help you win games and if Freo want him, they have picks eight, 13 and 16 at their disposal.
“If I’m Richmond, I’m saying – give us eight and 13. All of a sudden, you look at Richmond’s haul, and if they get that all done … all of a sudden they could have one, three, six, eight and 13.
“It takes a bit of zigging and zagging, but you can get there.”
The Tigers traded away first round picks to bring in Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper under Hardwick, leaving their young core somewhat behind where it should be.
Their current standout players under the age of 24 include Josh Gibcus, Tom Brown, Tyler Sonsie, Seth Campbell and Judson Clarke.
