David King is firmly against the idea of the AFL introducing a Wildcard Round, saying it will be a complete waste of time.
SEN’s Dwayne Russell broke the news during the week that the league is strongly considering the move for the 2025 season and beyond.
However, King has dismissed the idea, believing teams that finish 9th and 10th will simply never have an impact in finals, labelling the move a grab for cash.
“Mate, come on. What absolute nonsense this is,” King told SEN Breakfast.
“In 2021, team who’d only won 10 games for the year would be involved in this. They’ve had a failed season and we’re rewarding them? It’s just a nonsense.
“Give me meaningful impact in the finals over money.
“I’ll tell you what I’ll do … I’ll retire immediately if ninth or 10th wins the flag. Immediately. Teams that have failed seasons and they’re going to go on and win the flag? I am happy to walk away from the game if they win it.
“They’ve struggled to have 50-50 seasons and we’re going to reward them with a final series? That’s rubbish.
“Why do we need to manufacture one more junk weekend of footy to fill a void they created themselves with a game that won’t mean anything? It’s a nonsense.
“They will never get past a second week of the finals. It is a complete waste of time.”
As things currently stand, the Bulldogs would play Hawthorn and Carlton would face Essendon in the two Wildcard match-ups.
