Brisbane Lions forward Joe Daniher could have played his last game of AFL football according to Seven’s Mitch Cleary.

The big forward kicked two goals to go with 16 disposals and eight marks in Saturday’s 60-120 AFL Grand Final win over Sydney, and Nine's Damian Barrett also believes that it could be the last time fans watch the 30-year-old play at the top level.

Reports circled pre-match that Daniher was considering retirement despite being at the top of his game and Barrett says that the club have been aware of his potential retirement for some time.

“There’s a very, very strong chance he’s played his last game of football,” Barrett told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

“There was a conditioning and an awareness of that news that was known by Brisbane Lions officials before the game.

“I believe it was about a month ago or thereabouts. There had been some talk of course throughout the 2024 season that he might be considering his future.

“I believe there were key people at the Lions aware of that going into the game and while there is still some wriggle room – and I think a concerted pitch to have him revisit this decision.

“But at the moment there’s strong conditioning and even an expectation that that is it.

“It’s extraordinary given how well he played in that Grand Final and how well he played in last year’s Grand Final.”

Daniher kicked eight goals for Brisbane across the 2024 AFL finals series.

The 204-gamer is contracted for one more season at the club.
