“People follow Addin”: Tonga assistant Young heaps praise on Fonua-Blake’s leadership

Tonga’s assistant coach Dean Young has opened up on the influence of the side’s newly named co-captain Addin Fonua-Blake ahead of the 2024 Pacific Championships Campaign.

Fonua-Blake was announced as co-captain alongside veteran Jason Taumalolo for this year’s tournament as the Tongan side aims to pull off another upset of the heavyweights of Australia and New Zealand.

Since pledging his allegiance to Tonga in 2017, Fonua-Blake has represented his country of heritage on 11 occasions and has become a crucial part of the nation’s recent success.

After being named as the co-captain of Tonga, the imposing forward has wasted little time to showcase his leadership abilities.

“I had a bit to do with him down there (the Dragons), I’ve always got a lot of time for Addin,” Young told SEN 1170 Mornings.

“What Addin is he influences people, people follow Addin and they wait to hear what he’s got to say.

“Along his journey, he’s worked out that he’s got a lot of influence and he wants to lead people in a positive way.

“I know all the players in Tonga look up to him, I know he’ll do a good job on Friday night.”

Fonua-Blake will lead the pack alongside Tongan stalwart Taumalolo, who has 16 caps to his name.

“He’s obviously had some good people to learn off,” Young continued.

“Jason Taumalolo is obviously part of the leadership group and co-captains with Addin, I know Addin looks up to Jason.

“(He’s) watched him lead this nation for many, many years, they’re a great combo.”

Tonga start their 2024 Pacific Championships Campaign against Australia on Friday night.
