The three-Test India youngster that Paine is tipping to impress this summer

Former Australian Test captain has picked his Indian player to watch in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

While Rishabh Pant is expected to take the gloves for the visitors, Paine thinks that another wicketkeeper in Dhruv Jurel could be the name that impresses most down under.

Even though Jurel might have to earn his way into the team as a specialist batsman, Paine thinks that the 23-year-old has all of the ability to do that after watching him make 80 and 68 for India A against Australia A at the MCG in last week’s four-day clash.

“There’s a guy who has wicket kept in a few Test matches for India,” Paine said on SEN Tassie.

“He averages 63 out of the three Tests he’s played, and his name is Dhruv Jurel.

“I don't know if you saw much of the highlights, but after seeing him bat (against Australia A) – even though he’s a wicketkeeper, from what I’ve seen on this tour and from India’s batting in the last couple of months, I'd be staggered if he doesn't play.

“He scored one of the more polished 80s I've seen, and we were all sitting around as staff of Cricket Australia and thought, ‘Wow, this guy can seriously play’.”

Paine, who coached Australia A in the clash, was impressed most by Jurel’s class and how comfortable he looked batting on a bouncy MCG wicket, something that a lot of players from the subcontinent could struggle with.

“He's 23 and he’s played three Test matches, but he looked a class above all of his teammates, to be fair, and handled the pace and bounced really well, which can be unusual for an Indian player,” Paine said.

“Keep an eye out for him this summer. I think he's going to impress a lot of Australian fans.

“Even though it’s going to be another step up against the big three (of Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood), he looks like he has the game to play Test cricket.”

Jurel’s three Tests came against England in February and March. The youngster kept in all of those matches and made scores of 46, 90, 39 not out and 15 in his four Test knocks.

The first of five Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests begins on November 22 at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
