Former Melbourne Storm captain Christian Welch has announced his immediate retirement after 163 first grade games due to medical grounds.
Welch, a 2020 Premiership winner and Queensland Origin representative, suffered a number of injuries during his 10-year career with Melbourne including concussions and severe knee injuries.
The 30-year-old confirmed that a persistent back injury was the main factor in his decision to retire.
“Well done on a very, very good career,” SEN’s Andrew Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“I think he has something to offer the sport of rugby league post career.”
Welch previously held the position of Rugby League Players Association player director until the end of the 2023 season. He has been linked to a full-time position within the RLPA.
