Former Melbourne defender Daniel Ward had his life turned upside down by a crippling gambling addiction.
It was an issue that was well-documented over his 136-game career with the Demons and Ward’s darkest times with gambling came after his 2007 retirement when financial pressures hit hardest.
While Ward’s problems came to the fore during his career in a public manner, he’s concerned for the modern-day player who might not realise they have a problem due to the ease of wagering via technology.
“What I found out about myself was there were a lot of things that you can't do as an AFL footballer,” Ward told This is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers.
“I've got an addiction gene or disposition in my family background. I don't drink a hell of a lot and I don't touch drugs, but before I knew it, I was having a gambling addiction.
“Obviously, now if you've got an issue, it's a lot harder for guys and there are no real telltale signs either.
“I could whip out my phone now and be doing it. Back then you had to go to the TAB or put money in your account.
“If there's an issue with people or players now, it's a lot harder to uncover because it's just all on your phone and credit card.”
Ward discussed his football journey, gambling addiction and how the AFL is handling the issue on this week’s show.
