Reece Walsh’s Kangaroos debut was as good as any, playing out a man-of-the-match performance in Australia’s demolition of England in the first Ashes test in 22 years.
Scoring two tries - including the opener - and pulling off a pair of try-saving interceptions in front of 60,812 at Wembley Stadium, Walsh carried his elite form from the NRL season into the green and gold, putting on a masterful display in the Kangaroos' 26-6 win.
Off the back of his brilliant NRL Grand Final performance, Walsh was taken aback by the travelling support.
“It was pretty surreal for myself being at Wembley, being among world-class players. We definitely got the support from everyone who’s here to support us,” Walsh told the BBC.
“I’m probably happier with the two tries I stopped (than the two I scored). I think that goes a long way to getting the result tonight. They got that late try there that we’re pretty disappointed with.”
Australia's coach Kevin Walters was delighted for the 23-year-old.
“He’s been in great form for a long time, and it’s just good to see him being Reece Walsh and just playing footy,” he said of the Brisbane Broncos man.
“Our defence was superb, we’re really happy with how we’ve come here and what we’ve done.”
Australia now go 1-0 up in the series, with a chance to once again claim the trophy, keeping England without a series win for 56 years.
The second test is set for Saturday November 1st.
