Australia star Josh Hazlewood has been cleared for the Ashes but reserve quick Sean Abbott has been rued out of the first Test after the both sustained injuries while playing in the Sheffield Shield.
Both were taken for scans on their hamstrings having been forced to leave the field on Day 3 at the SCG where NSW were playing Victoria in the Sheffield Shield.
"Josh Hazlewood will join the Australian squad as planned in Perth ahead of the first NRMA Insurance Ashes Test," Cricket Australia said in a statement on Wednesday evening.
"Hazlewood left the field late in Victoria’s innings at the SCG today reporting tightness in his right hamstring. He underwent precautionary scans which have cleared him of muscle strain. He will train as planned in the lead up to the first Test in Perth.
"Sean Abbott also left the field having reported left hamstring soreness.
"Scans confirmed a moderate grade hamstring injury. He will not be available for selection for the first Test match in Perth and his return to play plan will be developed over the coming weeks."
Captain Pat Cummins, who will already miss the first Test with injury, was at the SCG when Hazlewood and Abbott failed to return to the field, says both were quickly sent for scans.
Cummins added that Hazlewood was 'chipper' following his scan and 'pretty confident' that his concern shouldn't be much of an issue.
“I was at the SCG. There was a bit happening there for an hour or so,” Cummins said at a press conference.
“Both had scans. I haven’t got 100 per cent across all the details but I think Joshy was pretty chipper when he got out. Hopefully he should be fine. Seany I’m not so sure about I think they’re still assessing.
“They were hamstrings.
“Obviously a week away from the Test series always you always err on the side of caution so I think they wanted to see what was happening before pushing it and potentially making it any worse.
“Hopefully not too much (disruption). Again we’ll wait and see how it comes out over the next 24 hours. I think Joshy was pretty confident when he walked out so hopefully it shouldn’t make too much of an issue.”
South Australian Brendan Doggett will be on standby for selection.
