There is outrage in Italy on the eve of the Winter Olympics following news that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will be attending the event in a security capacity.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that ICE would be in Cortina to protect US vice-president, JD Vance and secretary of state, Marco Rubio who are expected to attend the Opening Ceremony.

Protests and outcry in America continue to grow following the fatal shootings by ICE agents of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, and that anger has now spread to Italy.

With country’s far-right government reportedly looking to block the agents from entering the country, Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala went hard.

“This is a militia that kills,” Sala told Italian radio RTL 102. “A militia that enters into the homes of people, signing their own permission slips. It is clear they are not welcome in Milan, without a doubt.”

News of ICE’s plans presence at the Olympics comes just a day after it was confirmed that their agents would “conduct enforcement at Super Bowl LX in California”.

ICE will have a visible presence around Levi Stadium ahead of the Seattle Seahawks v New England Patriots blockbuster on Feb 9 (AEDT).

"DHS is committed to working with our local and federal partners to ensure the Super Bowl is safe for everyone involved, as we do with every major sporting event, including the World Cup,” DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin Yoho said.

"Our mission remains unchanged.

"Those who are here legally and are not breaking other laws have nothing to fear."
