AFL Origin twist that puts clubs in control of their stars

Clubs with State of Origin players have been reassured they can control how much time their stars spend on-field as the game prepares for the return of state football.

After years of conjecture over the legitimacy of the concept in the modern game, Western Australia will host Victoria on February 14 at a sold-out Optus Stadium.

While the season-eve clash is being celebrated by long-standing Origin advocates, others remain sceptical given what is at stake in a national club competition.

To smooth any concern among clubs, the league has asked them for recommendations for game time and any restrictions their players might have as they prepare for the 2026 season proper.

Several clubs contacted by SEN have confirmed they have the opportunity to restrict the playing times of specific players in Perth later this month.

Some have made clear they only want their star players featuring for a certain amount of minutes.

But others are more relaxed, with individual preparation and the number of players involved from each club clearly a factor.

Some clubs, using Origin as a supplement to one of their two practice matches, believe the biggest issue will be getting enough minutes into those that play.

There’s a belief among some in clubland that while they may be tempted to tell their players to take it easy on February 14, competitiveness could quickly kick-in.

Jeremy Cameron (arm), Toby Greene (glute) and Jesse Hogan (foot) are among those in doubt for the Origin clash. Brandon Starcevich (knee) has already been withdrawn.
