Australia begun their T20 World Cup campaign in strong fashion on Wednesday night (AEST), defeating Ireland by 67 runs in Colombo.
After losing captain Mitchell Marsh at the eleventh hour with a groin injury, Travis Head took the reins as skipper and opted to bat first.
While he didn't last long, his promoted opening partner Josh Inglis ensured Australia scored at a clip early, making 37 from 17 balls.
Even though Australia were scoring quickly with Cameron Green (21 off 11) putting them to all parts, they were losing enough wickets to keep Ireland in the game.
Those early wickets meant that Matt Renshaw (37 off 33) and Marucs Stoinis (45 off 29) had to consolidate, and they were able to get the side to 182 from their 20 overs.
It was always going to be a big task for Ireland on a slow, turning wicket.
The Irish lasted only 16.5 overs as they were bowled out for 115, with Man of the Match Nathan Ellis taking a ridiculous 4/12 from his 3.5 overs.
With Marsh now sidelined with internal testicular bleeding, Steve Smith joins the side in Sri Lanka as cover but may not yet be called into the squad unless required.
Astatement from Cricket Australia said: "Mitchell Marsh will miss the opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after sustaining a direct blow to the groin during training earlier this week. He is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement.
"Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice.
"Standby player Steve Smith will travel to Sri Lanka as cover to acclimatise and prepare, should he be required."
Australia’s next match is Friday against Zimbabwe – live on SEN from 4pm AEDT, with Tom Morris, Bryce McGain and Bharat Sundaresan.
