The Dan Gorringe vs "old man media" saga has taken an unexpected twist with the player-turned podcaster turning to traditional journalism to air his latest views.
The former Carlton and Gold Coast player was criticised by numerous members of the media over the weekend for airing expletive-laden audio of Sam Docherty tearing the Blues to pieces.
It was not Docherty’s views that were condemned but rather the fact they were part of a private conversation and meant for public consumption. In spite of this Gorringe opted to include them in his podcast.
“That’s just reprehensible behaviour,” Gerard Whateley said on SEN's Crunch Time on Saturday.
“I know you don’t want to stand inside the media, but there are actually parameters that guide what goes to air and what doesn’t, and what’s private and what’s public.
“And just because you want to crash through what things have always been, you can’t do that."
Whateley doubled down on his views come Tuesday, adding: "The football media as it were has changed drastically but the airing of a private message without consent, knowledge or permission is unethical, immoral and you wouldn't have to go too far to find an opinion that is is illegal.
"The damage done to Sam Docherty stands as a cautionary tale. It was reprehensible. That has dawned too late on the individual responsible."
Docherty has since been dropped by Carlton for a forthcoming function while Gorringe has shown some contrition and remorse towards his “best mate” for releasing the soundbite but made no apologies to “old man media” having also gone after Matthew Lloyd and Leigh Montagna.
“Sam Docherty is a genuine Carlton legend. The guy has given everything to the football club through the best times and the worst times, through injuries, cancer, leadership, the lot. He's the definition of what a Carlton person should be,” Gorringe wrote on DDF's IG page.
“I’m the idiot.
“I didn't think, I played a voice note of him criticising the game plan and it's led to him being dropped from a Carlton function. That's the part that sits the worst with me.
“Doc should be celebrated every time he walks into a Carlton event.
“At the same time, it's pretty clear there are some people in old man media who have been waiting for a moment like this to come after what we're doing at DDF. That's fine.
“We understand disruption ruffles feathers.”
Such is his ambition to “ruffle feathers” Gorringe has now decided to make his presence known in “old school media” taking out a full-page advert in this weekend’s Round 1 edition of the Record.
“I have a few quirky ones, one concerns Gorringe and this circus at Carlton,” SEN’s Sam Edmund said on Tuesday afternoon.
“It was – by his own words – his stupidity that got him, Carlton and Docherty to this point
“He has gone and taken a full-page ad in this week’s record, and it reads like a footy banner.
“It will be available this weekend.
“I’m not sure he wrote this one himself let’s say that.”
The Round 1 Record will be available from this Thursday.
