Trade talk: Seven 'utopian' targets for West Coast

West Coast have reannounced themselves to the AFL world, claiming two unlikely wins in one of the great indicators of future riches.

And SEN's Tom Morris believes that continued signs of the sort could propel the club's appeal to some of the game's top players.

One of the biggest franchises in the AFL, West Coast's appeal from a fan, stadium and history perspective has always remained steadfast.

However, with the addition of attractive, fun football, alongside some of the game's best young talents, it may not be long before the Eagles are once again a destination club.

With that in mind, Morris floated five names he believes could be a possibility to suit up out West in the coming years.

“I want to give you a utopia,” Morris told SEN’s Locked In.

“All of a sudden, glass half full, West Coast. It’s something we haven’t said in a few years.

“They’ve got money to spend, they are a big club, and all of a sudden there is some hope about the Eagles. There is a sense of positivity.

“Players might want to go there. Actually, some good players might want to go there.

“Let’s say at the end of the year, they go up to Mitch Georgiades. He has a year remaining on his contract, and absolutely – I think – open to leaving. Port can get a good deal for him now given he is contracted.

“What about Chad Warner at the end of next year as a free agent? He looks good in a West Coast jumper all of a sudden.

“He can’t get a game at Melbourne… Trent Rivers. He’s contracted until the end of next year, what do West Coast do at the end of this year? Will they give up a good draft pick, and will Melbourne take it? Especially if he’s playing VFL.

Lachie Neale? Given what he’s been through over the summer, would they ask the question? They’ve got the money – back up the truck. He’d be good for the young midfielders.

“The last one – Patrick Cripps. He is out of contract at the end of next year. If Carlton fall apart this year, I know he is a franchise player. It extends his career, it gets him home, and it gives Carlton a draft pick while they have it.

“I would have thought it’s absurd that Sam Mitchell goes to West Coast and Jordan Lewis goes to Hawthorn. Clayton Oliver goes to GWS, Luke Hodge goes to Brisbane. These things happen, even for captains of the club.

“It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that these sorts of things happen in football. If West Coast offered a first rounder for Patrick Cripps at the end of the year, and Carlton finish in the bottom four or five, would the Blues consider it?”

Locked In host Kane Cornes also offered two players that the Eagles could look to add to bolster their list going forward.

Jed Walter is one I’d go for,” Cornes suggested.

“They’ve got key position players everywhere, out of contract – I’d give him a large cheque, and I’ve said that before.

“You want some protection for Harley Reid and Willem Duursma and a few of the youngsters coming through. What about a look at Ollie Wines for a couple of years?

“Ollie, we’ll get you for free, we’ll pay you $600,000 a year. Your job is to do what Tim Kelly is doing, and you’ve probably got a few more years than Tim. Protect your youngsters and do your thing.

“He’s a ripper, Ollie Wines. He is a hard trainer, he’s built of the best character. I don’t know if he’s open to it, but there’s one that they might be able to go after for free.”
