While he may not have a contract with the Kangaroos at the moment, Kevin Walters is confident that he'll be the man in charge ahead of this year's Rugby League World Cup.

The Brisbane Broncos legend was hired as the national team coach for the Rugby League Ashes last July, replacing Mal Meninga.

And having delivered a 3-nil series whitewash against England, it was expected that the ARLC would extend his current contract for another 12 months, seeing through to the World Cup, which will be played in Australia.

Six months later, there has been no official confirmation that Walters will be the man in charge.

And with the World Cup five months away, there are growing concerns about the lack of urgency by the ARLC around the situation.

But the 58-year-old legend admits he's not too concerned by his lack of contract, having already begun his preparations for the tournament.

“There's been a lot of discussion around that,” Walters acknowledged on SENQ Breakfast

“The NRL is a busy world, as you could imagine. Peter V'landys is a busy person, so I'm not too concerned.

“The World Cup is at the end of the year. We're doing some planning around the World Cup.

“We've already had some meetings and the like, so, yeah, it'll move forward in the right direction."

The Rugby League World Cup begins on October 15 with Australia playing in the tournament opener against New Zealand at Allianz Stadium in Sydney.
