“Unacceptable”: Severe pressure mounting on Yze

Pressure will begin to seriously mount on Adem Yze if Richmond continues to struggle.

That is the opinion of Kane Cornes who saw some “unacceptable” things from Tigers players during their 70-point loss to Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday.

He wonders what sort of impact these defeats will continue to have after the Tigers slid back to 18th following a ninth loss of 40 points or more.

“There are some very good coaches without a job right now,” Cornes said on SEN's Fireball.

“There are some good young ones, and some good ones who have done it before.

“This pressure is going to start to build on the coach, Adem Yze.”

After the game, Yze spoke of leaving opportunities on the table during the lacklustre display against the Hawks.

“If it was just the fact that they are too good then you’d cop that. I didn’t feel like that was the case which sort of showed in the second half,” Yze said post-game.

“We left a lot of opportunities out there and I think that did affect us mentally.”

But Cornes does not agree with those comments, suggesting there was a distinct lack of effort among the black and yellow.

He labelled some efforts as “unacceptable”.

“I wouldn’t be going down the missed opportunities path, I’d be going down the effort path,” he continued.

“Because there was some effort stuff there that was unacceptable, particularly in the first half.

“At the start of the third quarter, if Adem wants to go back and watch the first five minutes, there were some unacceptable efforts.

“Most good team defends with the footy. Dion Prestia tried to slice one from an out on the full deep in his back pocket, then James Sicily runs through and kicks a goal. That was not a missed opportunity, that was effort.

“That’s the problem for him (Yze).”

Co-host David King posed the question regarding Yze’s future at the helm, suggesting the third-year coach is under an enormous amount of pressure.

“Is Yze still there mid-year next year?,” he said.

“I think he’s under severe pressure. This is what happens at elite level sport - if you can’t show that you are the answer then people start questioning you if they can’t see the long-term viability.

“I want to know at the end of 2027, is Adem Yze still in the chair? Because I think the way it’s going is he is the classic rebuild coach who does all the hard work, all the leg work, and finds himself in an awkward space.”

Cornes preferred to rephrase the question to what Yze must do to survive in the role.

He feels a call could be made in the back half of next season, depending on Richmond’s won-loss.

“Next year will be year four. Nine wins and 55 losses. It’s not a great record at 15 per cent win-loss,” Cornes said further.

“The way I’d like to reframe the question is: What would he have to do to survive next year?

“I think you’d need to win eight games next year. So you’re holding until late next year on that call (whether to stick with him or not).”

The discussion came after Richmond CEO Shane Dunne said on Sunday that Yze was doing an “outstanding job” and the club has “no issues” with him.

Yze is contracted with Richmond until the end of 2028.
