Draft Watch: Vic Metro big guns destroy Vic Country

The AFL Under-18 National Championships came to a close on Sunday with Victoria Metro dominant in the final match.

The Metro outfit had already won the tournament prior to clash with Victoria Country at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium, but capped it with an exclamation mark in the form of a 92-point drubbing.

All the top individual performances were monopolised by Vic Metro players who did as they pleased in the mammoth triumph.

There was also one Talent League game with the Sandringham Dragons easily accounting for the Tasmania Devils in Hobart.

Vic Country (39) v (131) Vic Metro

It was a commanding performance from Vic Metro. Flynn Woolhouse, from the Oakleigh Chargers and Wesley College, was the perfect target up forward.

He finished with a bag of five goals from 14 disposals plus 11 score involvements and 10 marks which were both game-highs.

Woolhouse’s fellow key forward Harrison Leeder was impressive with three goals from 10 touches, while Leeder’s Northern Knights mate Sam Gayfer produced the same stat lines.

Sandringham Dragons star Albert Macgowan led the way with 29 disposals as well as eight score involvements, five inside 50s and a goal. Also busy around the ball was Western Jets gun Angus Tippett who had it 24 times, provided six inside 50s, had eight score involvements, four clearances and kicked two goals.

Star Knights ruckman Harry Van Hattum turned it on for Metro. He had 23 hitouts, 16 possessions, a game-high 12 contested possessions, six clearances and four inside 50s to remind everyone what he is capable of. His Knights and ruck/forward partner Lewis Houndsome chimed in with 16 touches, 11 hitouts, nine score involvements, four clearances and two goals, while Jets jet Lachlan Hicks had 21 touches and eight score involvements.

For Vic Country, it was few and far between to find some winners, but GWV Rebels star Ethan Drever had 17 disposals and five tackles as one of their best. Bendigo Pioneers gun and Carlton father/son prospect Cody Walker contributed 19 touches, as did Dandenong’s Gus Kennedy and Murray’s Richmond NGA talent Tanner Armstrong. The unbeaten Vic Metro finished up with four wins with margins of 36 points over WA, 83 points over the Allies, 46 points over SA and this crowning moment of 92 points over Country.

Tasmania Devils (64) v (105) Sandringham Dragons

The Dragons were too good for the Devils at North Hobart Oval, winning by 41 points. Max Matthews had 20 disposals for the winning team, plus nine marks, while Henry Thomas was influential with 17 touches, nine marks and four inside 50s.

Oliver Mangoni booted three goals from 15 possessions while Quentin Hoffmann also helped himself to three goals from 11 possessions and seven marks. Charlie Brookes had 16 disposals and a game-high six tackles.

For the Devils it was Mason Brown who played a lone hand up forward with a game-best five goals producing half of his side's major scores. Jake Beams, son of former Demon Ben, was prolific with 31 disposals (24 kicks), his Allies colleague Archie Devine had it 22 times. Ruckman Oliver Freeland tried hard with 33 hitouts and 13 disposals while Max Gulliver also contributed strongly with 20 possessions and a game-high seven inside 50s.

There is only one Talent League fixture next weekend - Tassie v Calder Cannons in Hobart on Sunday.
