Signed and sealed: Mitchell remains with Hawthorn on new deal

Hawthorn has signed Sam Mitchell to a three-year extension, locking him in at Dingley until the end of 2030.

It's understood the playing group was told of Mitchell's fresh deal on Monday by CEO Ashley Klein, who did the bulk of the negotiations. 

Already contracted until the end of 2027, Mitchell now boasts the longest deal of all 18 coaches, though Ken Hinkley's arrangement at the Devils lasts until 2031.

Mitchell conceded he was open to phone calls from rival clubs in late June following a mutual pausing of contract discussions.

But when they resumed, negotiations moved quickly between the club and his management.

There's little doubt his new deal is worth more than $3 million in total, according to industry sources familiar with the going rate for senior coaches of Mitchell's calibre. 

As per regulations introduced by the league last year, up to 20 per cent of Mitchell's wage can be absorbed outside the soft cap, leaving space for other football department staff to receive pay rises. 

The 43-year-old has led the Hawks to 58 wins from 111 games, including finals campaigns in each of the last two seasons. 

The club is expected to announce Mitchell's contract extension as early as this week.
