Yellow Jersey will kick off his spring campaign in the Heatherlie Stakes at Caulfield, with trainer Calvin McEvoy indicating this morning that they are eyeing a tilt at the Cox Plate rather than the Caulfield or Melbourne Cups.

Speaking on SENTrack & RSN's Giddy Up with Gareth Hall, McEvoy revealed the plan for the talented galloper who will resume over 1700m in the Listed feature on August 29.

When asked by fellow trainer Troy Corstens whether the aim was to win a Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup, McEvoy made it clear the stable had a different target in mind.

“He’s going to run in the Heatherlie (first-up),” McEvoy said.

"We're going to try and win a Cox Plate."

McEvoy believes Yellow Jersey’s racing pattern could make a Caulfield Cup campaign challenging, with his ability to settle a key consideration.

“I think he’s shown it would be difficult to get him to settle over 2400m,” McEvoy explained.

“I just worry about his rating if we kept the Caulfield Cup option open from a rating point of view.”

The Cox Plate looms as the major target, with McEvoy also revealing he has the same ambition for stablemate and Cups double champion Half Yours.

Asked by Hall who he believes has the better chance of winning the Cox Plate between Half Yours and Yellow Jersey, McEvoy opted for the former.

“I’ll go with my heart and say Half Yours,” he said.

Yellow Jersey will begin his campaign in the Heatherlie Stakes later this month which will provide the first glimpse of whether the five-year-old can establish himself as a genuine Cox Plate contender.
