Matt Reid's Wednesday's racing preview at Devonport (26/08)

Liam Beamish has made a brilliant start to his training career and hopes to build on that with two runners in Devonport on Wednesday.

Beamish has only three horses in his stable, yet from eight starters already has four winners.

City Wok and The Real Man were both victorious in Devonport on 26 July. After both were victims of the final six races being abandoned in Devonport on 12 August, they’re set to represent Beamish on Wednesday’s nine-event card.

“I was confident they’d both win last time, so I was pretty flat when they were called off,” said Liam Beamish.

The 12 August Devonport meeting was abandoned after two races due to safety concerns following the discovery of rocks on the track. Since then, remedial works have been undertaken, and trackwork and trials (18 August) have been conducted without incident.

“I’ve spoken to trainers and jockeys and walked the track myself and think we’re good to go,” said Beamish, who is based not far from Ladbrokes All Weather Spreyton at Wesley Vale.

Beamish will be out to own the middle legs of Wednesday’s quaddie with City Wok and The Real Man in back-to-back races.

City Wok was backed from $4.50 into $2.50 for a Class 1 (1350m) a fortnight ago, the same race he is in on Wednesday. He’s drawn barrier 1 with Luke Dempsey to ride.

“He was a bit of hard work to get to the races the first time around, but we’ve had no issues since then.

“I galloped him the Friday after the abandoned meeting once the track was reopened, and he’s in good order. The 1350m should suit him more than 1150m did first-up.”

The Real Man has won three of his four Devonport starts and finished second on the other occasion. The 4yo has drawn barrier two in a BM64 (1150m) and will carry 59kg after a 2kg claim for Kirra-Lee Lane.

“He’s carried big weights before, but not quite as much as he’ll have on Wednesday.

“He’s not showing any signs of slowing down; he was bucking his head off a couple of days after his last win.”

Along with recent Hobart winner, Henley Extreme, Beamish’s stable trio have given him an incentive to grow his team.

“I know this strike rate won’t last forever, but it’s been a great start. I’ll probably look to add a few more to keep things ticking over when some of them head for a spell.”
