A major incident has occurred during Newcastle's Grand Final farewell parade, with two people in critical condition after a car crashed into fans waiting on the side of the road.

Fans officially farewelled the Knights on Saturday morning, with their bus heading up the M1 Highway to Sydney for their NRL Grand Final against the Roosters.

But during those farewells, ten people were hit by a car driven by an 18-year-old P-Plater, with multiple ambulances and medical helicopters called to Newcastle Link Road at Transfield Drive roundabout to take those injured to John Hunter Hospital. A five-year-old girl and 67-year-old man remain in a critical condition.

Police arrested the driver at the scene, who was met with jeers and boos from the crowd. From initial investigations, NSW Police believe this is not terror-related.

Following the incident, it forced the Knights' bus to be diverted from its intended path.

In a statement, the Knights expressed their thoughts with those affected by Saturday morning's incident.

"The Newcastle Knights are aware of the traffic incident that occurred this morning in Wallsend," it read.

"Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the incident, including those at the scene and their families.

"As this is a matter for NSW Police, the Club will not be making any further comment at this time."

The Grand Final takes place on October 4 at Accor Stadium. The Knights will seek their third NRL Premiership.
