Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono is the subject of a police investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel.
The 30-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest and died following an on-field collision with the keeper on Monday (European time) and passed away hours later.
An emotional vigil was set up at Tenerife's home stadium with mourners leaving flowers and candles in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Vision of the incident shows Owono running towards the half-way line in a bid to clear the ball and in doing so, struck De Miguel in the chest and head.
De Miguel fell to the ground and remained motionless as players pleaded for medical assistance.
After receiving care for more than five minutes on the field, De Miguel was taken to hospital and, according to reports, suffered a heart attack on route.
Tenerife confirmed his death in a heart wrenching statement.
“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8am of Jesús de Miguel Alameda," it said.
“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfeñismo (supporters of Tenerife) that today weeps for this cruel outcome.
“The family of Jesús de Miguel thanks each and every one of the expressions of support received, and likewise requests, from the heart, the utmost respect for their privacy in these terrible moments.”
De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 and played 36 matches for the side, scoring 11 goals.
Reports from the ground claim that Owono was in tears after the incident and his social media accounts were immediately deactivated.
A statement from Andorra read: “We want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesús de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today’s match. A very strong hug to the player, his family and Tenerife.”
