Why Lynch should join Hawks

2018-08-03T08:48+10:00

AFLW star Daisy Pearce has revealed she would join Hawthorn if she were in the position of Gold Coast forward Tom Lynch, who announced yesterday his intention to leave the Suns at the end of this season.

Lynch is reported to have interest from numerous Victorian clubs with Richmond, Collingwood and Hawthorn expected to be the front runners for his signature.

Pearce, on SEN Breakfast, stated that she would see value in joining a building team, rather than joining the reigning premiers or someone on the top end of the ladder.

“Hawthorn,” said Pearce, on which team she would join if she was Tom Lynch.

“I think to be a part of something building would resonate with me.

“There’s a spot for Tom Lynch about to be vacated in the next few years with (Jarryd) Roughead in the twilight of his career, I’m not retiring him but a position to own will really open up there.

“But mainly to be part of something that’s building, rather to just lob in at the reigning premiers or a team that’s sitting third on the ladder.”

Former Essendon captain Tim Watson revealed that he would rather join Collingwood for similar reasons to Pearce, stating that he believes the Pies have built a list that will be able to contend for years to come.

“Collingwood, because they are building," Watson said.

“Richmond could actually win the flag this year and Tom Lynch might be thinking, gee are they going to be able to do it again, the chances of them doing a three-peat are remote.

“I’d go to Collingwood because I don’t think Collingwood will win the flag this year, but they’re building a very fine list and I think they’re going to have sustained success."

A further development in the Lynch saga came last night, when the Suns stripped Lynch of the captaincy following his announcement to leave.

With Lynch being injured for a major part of the season, Pearce doesn’t see the point in removing the captaincy and believes it is more of a stance by Gold Coast.

“The stripping of the captaincy was an interesting one,” Pearce said.

“He’s an injured player, he’s not going to play anyway, what does it really mean.

“It’s more Gold Coast drawing a line in the sand saying, we’re not a push over, we’re not just going to let people walk on out of here.

“It was almost ceremonial.”
