Will Bulldogs get first-round compensation for Dahlhaus?

2018-09-05T07:05+10:00

The Western Bulldogs are “within their rights” to receive a first-round pick as compensation for the departing Luke Dahlhaus, according to the Herald Sun’s Sam Edmund.

The Dogs confirmed last night Dahlhaus, an unrestricted free agent, will depart the Whitten Oval this offseason, with the 26-year-old being linked to Geelong.

Based on recent history, Edmund believes a first-round selection, as compensation for Dahlhaus, isn’t out of the question.

“I reckon the Western Bulldogs would want, and I think are within their rights to get, a first-round draft pick as compensation for losing Luke Dahlhaus,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.

“This time last year, that’s exactly what the Geelong footy club got when Steven Motlop left to go to Port Adelaide on a deal that was touted as four-years by $500,000. They got pick 19, the Cats, in that deal.

“The Dogs aren’t that upset at a player that they obviously like, and in their terms would have loved to kept, but he had been on the wane since 2016, they were never going to pay that figure (that Dahlhaus wanted).”

Edmund also explored how it might be a necessity for the Bulldogs to secure another early pick.

“The Dogs are going to need it, they don’t have a second round pick at the moment, they traded it last year,” he said.

“They got Rhylee West…depending on what happens there with other clubs’ interest, they may need to use that pick on Rhylee West, keep their pick six as it stands at the moment for the best kid other than Rhylee in the national draft.”
